Vitamin D plays an important role in the treatment against depression

The lack of vitamin D may increase the risk of depression in people over 50 years of age. It is what points out the study done in Ireland and published in the Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine.

Research specialists followed 3,965 people in this age group for four years and they listed that 400 people had developed depression. Participants in the group with low vitamin D levels showed a 75% higher risk of presenting the disease.

Vitamin D may be useful to prevent depression and also help in the treatment of patients who already have depressive symptoms.

People with depression should have special attention when it comes to the level of vitamin D – as well as those that present chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and osteoporosis. “Patients with depression are also among the risk groups because they usually do not want to leave home and sun exposure is very important for vitamin D production,” says an expert.

The lack of the nutrient is also associated with decreased immunity and bone mass impairment, which may favor the development of osteoporosis. Without the ideal level of vitamin D, only between 10% and 15% of calcium is absorbed by the organism. Moreover, the absence of vitamin is related to the evolution of rickets and even some types of cancer.

Sources of vitamin D: The sun does not need to be your only alternative

In addition to sun exposure of specific areas of the body, such as arms and legs – for 15 to 45 minutes, between the period from 10 to 16h30 – and without sunscreen, the ideal level of vitamin D can also be achieved by food source. However, ensuring proper intake of vitamin D only with feeding is extremely difficult.

According to a physician, to reach 2,000 IU of vitamin D it would be necessary to ingest about 422g of salmon per day or 706g of sardines (six cans) or even 80 egg yolks. A more practical option that does not compromise health is supplementation. Currently, in the market, it is possible to find vitamin D in soft capsules, easy to ingest, as the launch of Addera D3 2000UI.
